We had eyeball gumballs for our bingo prizes. As you can see, they are double the fun - fun to play with and fun to chew!
Busy day...part 1...
Wow! Today was totally packed with fun stuff! First, we made pumpkins that remind us about how to be safe when trick or treating.
Then we had a Warrior Awards program.
Courtney received a warrior of character award because she is a nice and caring girl that I can always count on to do the right thing. |
Jordan received the warrior in reading award. You will often find her reading her newest favorite book, even in her free time! |
Ian received the warrior in math award because he is such a smart cookie in math. |
Mandy received a warrior of character award because she is a good friend to others and works hard to always do the right thing. |
Colten received the warrior in writing award because he is often writing drafts and publishing stories, even during recess and free time. |

Making doughnuts
Today we had Junior Achievement with Mr. Hays. We learned about unit production and assembly line production and made paper doughnuts. Then quality control checked them over to make sure they were made just right. Here are Chloe and Julia with some of the doughnuts we made. Mr. Hays even brought real chocolate doughnuts for us to eat!

Hugo
We have been reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret in class for read aloud time. Today we finally got to the part where Hugo and Isabelle wound up the automaton with a key and it... ask your child what happened then! We learned a little about what automata are and how they work.
Here is some links that complement the book.

Sending good cheer to others
Dear Mrs. Hays' class,
Thank you for the fall decorations you sent us. We like the Indian corn and we enjoyed hanging them up. We put them on the nursing station and the doors to residents' rooms. We attached a few pictures to show you how much we appreciate your beautiful work!

Moon Phases Bonus Assignment
Students brought home an optional assignment sheet today, to be completed over the next two weeks. We are learning about the phases of the moon. Students have a chance to be a scientist and observe the moon and its changes. Please complete 4 boxes minimum per week, drawing the moon in the box for the appropriate date. If the sky is cloudy just write "cloudy" in the box. Students choosing to complete the assignment will get a small reward. The page is to be turned in on Halloween. I have also told the students that the best time to see the moon may be in the morning. Moonrise will be quite late in the evenings. We will give it a try and see how it works! Thanks for your help!

Fundraiser pickup
Fundraiser pickup is tonight only from 3:00-7:00. Any orders not picked up will be returned to the company, due to their perishable nature. Thanks for supporting our school!
Turn and Talk
We use "turn and talk" a lot during lesson time. That means we turn toward our partner, knee to knee and face to face, and have meaningful conversation about the lesson.

Our field trip to Koinonia
We had a great day for an outdoor field trip! We participated in several activities. At the fossil dig we learned about fossils, got to dig for them and even brought one home! We learned about birds, how they hunt for food, and what happens when there is competition for food. In the discovery room we got to view and touch different animal skins, shells, and lots of other things from nature. We played BUGS bingo and learned all about insects and some insect relatives. We ate our lunch outside and roasted marshmallows over a campfire Mr. Hays built for us. At the end of the day we got to go on a nature hike. Thank you to Mrs. Heiden and Mrs. Richey for helping take pictures for our slide show.
