Using descriptive language with Legos

We built a simple design with 5 bricks and then had to use descriptive language to explain to a partner how to build the same design.  This was harder than we thought! Nice job, Lego builders!

Newsletter 1-22-16

Since we have yet to have a snow day, we get a three day weekend!  Yay!  There is no school on Monday, January 25.

Keep working on telling time!  Most of us are proficient at telling time to the half hour.  We will work on time to 5 minutes next week.

We plan on going outside for recess unless it is below 20 degrees.  The kids really need to burn off that extra energy and get some fresh air.  Please make sure they bring hats, glove, boots, snow pants, and warm coats.   It's much more fun outside when we are warm. Thanks!

Newsletter 1-15-16

We are moving on to telling time in math. This is a big one for second grade. You can help us by talking about time during your day with your child. Talk about what time you have dinner, bedtime, or family events together. Talk about how much time until those things will happen. Giving them authentic experiences that matter really helps to build deep understanding.

Parent teacher conferences are Thursday, January 21.  Sign up sheets were sent home Thursday.  I will not be meeting with everyone this round, but I plan  on meeting with everyone I did not meet with the first round.  If  you are not scheduled for a conference but would like one, I would be happy to schedule one with you.  Just drop me a not or an email.

Inferring riddles

In reading workshop we are working on inferring.  Inferring is using clues from the text and things you already know to figure out things the author doesn’t tell you in the text.  We practiced by making some inferring riddles in our reading notebooks.

Learning about Agriculture

Today Miss Zorn taught us about agriculture.  We learned about plants and animals.  We planted some seeds.  We read a book about Farmer Billy Bob Joe who raises chickens.  We colored a picture of corn.  We learned about chickens, eggs, and farms from Miss Zorn.

These are some of the things we learned today:
Chickens are important because they provide food for us, like chicken nuggets.
We grew the most popcorn in Indiana in 2012 or 2013.
Sometimes you keep chicken eggs to raise more chickens.
You have to haul the chickens to a special place to make them into food.
Plants need sunshine, soil, and water to grow.
Chives are kind of like onions.

Celebrating our all about books

We worked super hard to finish up our nonfiction all about writing before Christmas break.  In writing all about books we teach our readers information about a topic we are an expert on.  Today we celebrated by sharing our writing with each other.

Winter is here!

Please start sending your child with warm winter coats, hats, gloves, and winter boots.  If they like to play in the snow, snow pants are also good.  Thanks for your help with this!
