The web address www.kidblog.org/hayscorner111 is for our student blogs.  We will be accessing them while we still have the ipads in our classroom.  Students can reply to posts I send to the class and to each other.  This can be accessed at home as well from the internet or any Apple device with the free Kidblog app.  Students must login with their colornumber password.  We will be posting some of our classwork here as well.

Next week is spirit week in preparation for grades 3-5 to take ISTEP.  We are joining in on the fun!

Kidblog

Today we got our own blogs. We are all linked together under a classroom blog. We learned how to comment on a post. Then we learned how to reply to each other's comments. Within 30 minutes we had 122 comments connected to our original post - holy cow! If you go to www.kidblog.org/hayscorner111 and let your child login they can show you. We will be sharing thoughts about our reading later this week. Here are a few students working on posting comments.

Thanks to all who contributed to our valetine party.  We had a great time and enjoyed some fantastic snacks.  Thanks to Mrs. Hurst who came in earlier in the week to help us make a fun crystal craft. We also did some measurement and other math activities with candy hearts.

We are working on storytelling during writing workshop.  We are learning that stories have a beginning, middle, and an end.  You also can't have a good story without a problem to solve!  We are using the Toontastic app on the iPads to record and animate our stories.  It is a super experience and I can't wait to see how they all come together!  We have some good storytellers in this class.

Valentine's Day Fun

What a fun day!  Sorry I didn't take any pictures of the crystal pipe cleaner shapes before they got out the door.  Look for them to come home!  Click here to see pictures and instructions.  Thanks Mrs. Hurst for organizing and making these with us!

Newsletter 2-8-13

We are learning about measurement in math.  We will be doing a lot of measuring in the next few weeks.  If you happen to have any extra yardsticks or metersticks (you know, sometimes I pick up extra ones that companies use for advertising at the county fair) that you would like to donate to the second grade for our measurement unit, we would greatly appreciate it.  We never seem to have enough!   On some homework pages, students will be required to use a ruler.  I have copied one for them on paper that they may keep in their homework folder to use, in case you happen to need one.  Here is another ruler you can print out.

Students are responsible to take at least one AR test a week over an AR book (from our classroom, library, or from home) with a score of 80% or higher.  They are welcome to bring books from home to test on if they wish.

Please make sure your child brings winter weather gear to wear at recess.  We go out most days.  It is really cold out there for them when they have no gloves or hats!  They are also welcome to bring boots and snowpants.

Measurement game

Today we began a measurement unit.  We made a mind map of some of the things we think about when we think about what measurement is.  We used the Popplet map on the iPad to record our thinking.  Then we played a game.  We predicted how long and item would be, then we measured with blocks.

Snowy day

Just kickin' back and relaxing in the "snow chair"...
