Earlier this week we learned how arrays show repeated addition.

Choosing just right books

Choosing a just right book for reading time is sort of like choosing the right shirt.

This is a too easy book.  It is too comfortable.  The words are too easy with none that are tricky.
It may be very short with large text.  I might have read it many times already.

This book is too hard.  It is not comfortable because it is full of tricky words I don't know.  I don't understand it.
The text might be small and there might be lots of pages with few pictures.

This book is just right!  It is not too easy or too hard.  I know most of the words,
but there are a few tricky ones.  It is not too long or too short.  I can understand it.

 Thanks for modeling, guys!

Practicing partner reading

Partners sit elbow to elbow and knee to knee when they are reading, with the book between them so they both can see.

Newsletter 8-14-15

We've had a great first week!  We are learning about how Reading and Writing Workshop flows and works in our classroom.  In math we are working on addition facts.
Spelling will be different this year than in the past.  We will be doing word study and we will not be having weekly tests.  When we are ready to start, I will give you more information.
We have a class blog at www.hayscorner.blogspot.com .  I hope to post new things about what we are learning in our classroom a time or two a week. Check it out!  Enter your email address there if you wish email notifications of blog updates.  If you have any questions regarding this, please email me at jhays@wawasee.k12.in.us.
We don't eat lunch until 11:55a.m. - that's much later than when your child was in first grade.  They often get hungry in the morning and love a small snack.  If you are able and haven't already, please send in a snack for the class snack cabinet for us to share.  Healthy, economical items like crackers, cereal, and pretzels are excellent.   Your kids thank you!

Please check the "sign up for remind messages" link on the right to sign up for the Remind text service!  Remind is a message service that enables me to send reminder text messages about important school events to your cell phone!  It is completely confidential.  It is one way communication, so if you need to contact me, please feel free to email me at jhays@wawasee.k12.in.us or call the school at 574-457-4484.  I use Remind to send reminders about things like field trips, bringing in picture envelopes, permission slips, schedule changes, special programs, and such.  Please sign up! I promise I will not overload your box with tons of messages and I will unsubscribe you at the end of the year. Thank you!
